History Uesugi Kenshin was one of the many powerful lords of the Sengoku period. In fact, many of his followers and others believed him to be the avatar of Bishamonten, and called Kenshin god of war. Kenshin died at age 49 in 1578, and his death poem is still well known today, “Forty Nine Years; One night's dream. A life time of prosperity; a cup of sake."
